The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute announced a call for applications for a new research program involving sleep diseases.

The new program (R01) will determine the optimal research design and pilot test the feasibility and implementation of a randomized clinical trial that will establish the effects of bariatric surgery on type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes or in cardiovascular, lung, and sleep diseases in people.

Grant applications must be submitted by November 19, 2009.

“This initiative may be of interest to sleep medicine specialists collaborating as part of team with surgeons, CVD specialists, metabolic/endocrine researchers, behavioral interventionists, clinical trialists, and others at their institution,” according to the announcement about the grant opportunity.
