A new documentary by filmmaker Rodney Ascher examines the phenomenon of sleep paralysis.
A medical condition called sleep paralysis causes people to wake up in the middle of the night unable to move their body. At the same time a shadowy figure, demon or old hag will often appear in the room and creep towards them as part of some sort of horrifying hallucination.
Filmmaker Rodney Ascher has a new documentary coming out next month called “The Nightmare,” which takes a look at the real-life phenomenon. And based on the trailer and personal accounts of the condition, it looks absolutely terrifying.
“While science can explain the biological phenomenon, what it can’t explain is why so many of its sufferers see eerily similar visions,” says a caption on the film’s Tumblr page.
Have had this condition for over 70 years. It is terrifying tho I do not experience the recurring objects described. Mine often occurs simultaneously with nightmares but not necessarily the same ones.
