A new survey released by Royal Philips Electronics finds that the average workplace manager is sleeping 19% less than the recommended amount of 8 hours per night. The five-country survey found that 40% of participants blame the current global economy as the major reason for their lack of sleep.

The majority of respondents (61%) said their work has been impacted negatively by lack of sleep. On average, each estimated 6.2 days per year were impacted by inadequate sleep.

Additionally, the survey found that despite 96% of managers recognizing that inadequate sleep can seriously affect a person’s health, only 29% discuss their problematic sleep patterns, and an even smaller 27% seek professional help from a physician.

On the subject of OSA, a high percentage of those polled (60%) identified the sleep disorder as a curable illness. Only 35% of respondents considered snoring a problem for them personally, while nearly three-quarters (65%) described snoring as a minor inconvenience that did not require action.

The survey was conducted using an online poll during March 2009 and surveyed 2,500 managers equally split across the UK, Germany, United States, Japan, and The Netherlands.
