The Toledo Blade published an obituary for Joseph I. Shaffer, a psychologist and longtime University of Toledo faculty member who was a pioneer in treating sleep disorders.

The West Toledo resident was president of Sleep Network Inc., a nationwide consortium of sleep centers he founded. He continued to teach at UT and was active in its center for sleep medicine.

“He was one of the most brilliant people I’ve come across,” said Dr. Andre Aguillon, associate medical director at UT’s regional center for sleep medicine and a medical faculty member.
