Siesta Awareness, a nonprofit organization, has dubbed today National Siesta Day, a day “to help promote the siesta and awareness of the benefits associated with it,” its Web-site announced.

Research suggests that a siesta, a midday nap popular in the Mediterranean, may improve productivity. Researchers have found that humans may have a strong biological urge for a short nap—between 10 and 20 minutes—in the early afternoon.

A short nap may also cut stress and decrease the risk of heart disease.
