The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has released new data from its 2025 Sleep in America Poll demonstrating the powerful link between sleep health and an individual’s ability to flourish in life. Flourishing encompasses happiness, productivity at home and work, goal achievement, and fulfilling social relationships—key indicators of well-being.

New findings from the Sleep in America Poll include:

  • Sleep Satisfaction and Flourishing: Nearly 9 in 10 adults (88%) who report good sleep satisfaction are flourishing, while less than half (47%) of those with poor sleep satisfaction experience the same level of well-being.
  • Sleep Duration Matters: People who get the NSF’s recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night are significantly more likely to flourish. Over 7 in 10 adults report that they thrive when they have enough quality sleep.
  • Consequences of Poor Sleep: Individuals with poor sleep health are
    • 4 times more likely not to be happy
    • 2.5 times more likely not to be productive at work
    • 3 times more likely not to achieve their goals
    • 2 times more likely not to be productive at home
    • 2 times more likely not to have a fulfilling social life

“We can’t overstate the significance of these findings. Poor sleep health is a major risk factor for lower well-being across multiple areas of life. Prioritizing sleep health at a societal level can lead to improved mental health, workplace efficiency, and stronger personal relationships—critical components of a thriving population,” says Joseph Dzierzewski, PhD, NSF’s SVP of research and scientific affairs, in a release.

“Sleep is fundamental to thriving across many aspects of our life,” says John Lopos, NSF CEO, in a release. “These study results reinforce how crucial positive sleep health is to basic achievements in life that are important to many people, beyond physical health.”
