The US Congress over the weekend passed legislation that prevents a 5% cut to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (SGR), which was scheduled to take effect January 1, 2007, and replaces it with a freeze at the 2006 rate. The legislation also earmarks funds to advert cuts in 2008.

“On behalf of our patients and sleep medicine professionals, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) applauds the actions of the US Congress,” said Michael H. Silber, MBChB, AASM president.  “This legislation shows that Congress is concerned for the welfare of Medicare patients as the cuts would have limited access to quality sleep specialists for many seniors.”
