Milwaukee-based Verlo Mattress has launched SmartWake, a consumer product that incorporates EarlySense sleep monitoring technology. The smart alarm clock monitors the user’s heart rate, breathing, and movement to identify sleep phases and uses technology to calculate the best time possible for starting the day, according to Verlo Mattress.

This is the first sleep technology product available within Verlo’s suite of personalized sleep solutions, which includes mattresses, pillows, and now sleep monitoring. It was developed in partnership with EarlySense, a company specializing in accurate patient monitoring systems. The patented technology of EarlySense is used in hospitals and healthcare systems. SmartWake is the first consumer-grade product created by EarlySense.

“At Verlo, we know a person’s sleep needs are unique. Our goal is to give each customer the knowledge and tools to achieve their best night’s sleep,” says Kathy Thornton-Bias, president and COO of Verlo Mattress, in a release. “We created SmartWake with leading technology to help users maximize their sleep and start every morning feeling their best.”

The SmartWake alarm wakes users during a light sleep phase, the optimal time for waking, within a selected time range (ex: 6-6:30 AM). This allows users to use their sleep cycles to their advantage and wake up at the best time so it’s easier to start their day, Verlo Mattress states.

The SmartWake sensor is a small disc-like device that is placed underneath the mattress. The data collected by the sensor is communicated via Bluetooth to the dedicated SmartWake App on the user’s synced smartphone, where the user sets the alarm.

In addition to the alarm function, SmartWake generates a personalized sleep report that includes heart rate, respiration rate, sleep duration, time to fall asleep, movement, sleep phases, time awake, and time in bed. It also provides daily sleep tips based on the automatic detection of sleep patterns, and a personalized sleep score to help users improve sleep quality.
