One of eight children growing up on a labor-intensive, small family farm in Transylvania, a region in central Romania, Damiana Corca always felt just a bit different.
“I wanted so badly to leave and do something else,” she said. “At 14 or 15, I thought I would do something very different or very special. Was I desperate not to have that life? Or sensing what was to come?”
