The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) named Thomas J. Balkin, PhD, as its new chairman. With the appointment, Balkin becomes the NSF’s eighth chair of the Board.

Balkin is chief of the Department of Behavioral Biology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. He received a PhD in experimental psychology at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

“The National Sleep Foundation has been fortunate in its ability to attract leading sleep scientists to volunteer their expertise,” said David M. Cloud, chief executive officer of the NSF in an announcement about Balkin’s appointment. “Dr. Balkin is internationally recognized for his research on sleep and its impact on human performance. His efforts have been invaluable to the US Military, the Department of Transportation, and NASA, and we’re greatly honored that he has accepted a leading role with the Foundation.”

“I’m both thrilled and honored to accept this position, and I look forward to helping to advance the NSF’s critical mission to improve sleep health and safety in the USA,” said Balkin.
