The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has developed and launched a clinical data registry exclusively for sleep medicine. The AASM Sleep Clinical Data Registry—Sleep CDR— will assist users in streamlining data collection and reporting.

“The AASM’s clinical data registry will help drive high-quality care in sleep medicine,” says AASM president Kannan Ramar, MBBS, MD, in a release. “Sleep CDR allows the sleep team at accredited sleep centers to track meaningful data, increase quality-based reimbursements, and evaluate performance against other providers to identify opportunities to improve patient care.”

Approved as a Qualified Clinical Data Registry by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Sleep CDR will support quality improvement efforts, collection of patient-reported outcomes data, and benchmarking. It also will facilitate participation in national quality reporting programs such as the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) administered by CMS. Another benefit of Sleep CDR is that it will streamline the AASM accreditation process, allowing sleep centers to set and track performance goals and pull reports to meet the quality assurance standard when applying for reaccreditation.

Sleep CDR will maintain data for the entire AASM quality measures portfolio, which includes screening for adult obstructive sleep apnea by primary care physicians and assessment and management of:

  • adult obstructive sleep apnea
  • pediatric obstructive sleep apnea
  • adult restless legs syndrome
  • insomnia
  • narcolepsy

“As more providers use the registry, it will become more valuable to the field as a whole,” says Timothy Morgenthaler, MD, chair of the AASM Quality Measures Task Force, in a release. “Data on dozens of quality measures and hundreds of patient outcomes can be used to develop additional quality measures and educational programs, while also supporting clinical research projects.”

Data entry and reporting in Sleep CDR is currently free for AASM facility members and individual members in AASM-accredited sleep centers. There is a $250 fee for MIPS submissions.
