Summary: The FDA has cleared the Happy Ring as a medical device to help evaluate suspected sleep apnea, combining multinight home sleep testing with its first clearance for round-the-clock physiologic monitoring.

Key takeaways:

  • The Happy Ring is now FDA-cleared to aid in evaluating adult patients suspected of sleep apnea, expanding its earlier clearance for continuous brain and body biometrics.
  • Through the Happy Sleep platform, users can order a sleep test online, wear the ring overnight, and consult virtually with a board-certified sleep physician.
  • Happy Health states the Happy Ring stands out for its jewelry-like ceramic design, long battery life, and clinical-grade sensors that allow for multi-night sleep studies and continuous health monitoring.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Happy Health Inc’s Happy Ring as software as a medical device to aid in evaluating sleep‐related breathing disorders of adult patients suspected of sleep apnea. This new clearance builds on the Happy Ring’s earlier FDA clearance for continuous brain and body biometrics, making the smart ring a combination of multinight home sleep test and 24/7 physiologic monitor.

Through the company’s Happy Sleep platform, individuals order a sleep test online, wear the ring overnight, and review the results with a board-certified sleep physician.

“Sleep is the foundation of health and the ‘canary in the coal mine’ of disease,” says Dustin Freckleton, MD, founder and CEO of Happy Health, in a release. “When we measure sleep accurately in people’s 20s, 30s, and 40s, we expose the patterns that drive heart disease, hypertension, metabolic, and behavioral disorders decades later. This clearance is just the beginning. Our sensor-rich ring will be diagnosing those comorbid conditions next, in the very near future. The best is yet to come.”

What Makes Happy Ring Different

According to Happy Health, Happy Ring differentiates itself from other FDA-cleared options because of its:

  • Design: Crafted from lightweight, hard ceramic and polished like jewelry, the ring stays powered for days.
  • FDA-cleared whole-body intelligence: A clinical-grade sensor suite delivers multi-night sleep studies and continuous preventative health monitoring.
  • Clinical pathway: Same day virtual appointments, in-network billing, and consumer financing move patients from test to treatment, to ongoing monitoring in a single experience.

“Happy Ring is much more than a sleep device,” says Jeff Durmer, MD, PhD, neurologist and advisor to Happy Health, in a release. “It brings hospital-level insights to any bedroom, opening a new frontier for how we deliver care. By expanding access, elevating diagnostic quality, and lowering total cost, this technology reshapes not only sleep medicine but the broader practice of medicine for patients everywhere.”
