The Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the USDepartment of Health and Human Services is charged with the task of enforcing the health care fraud and abuse laws. OIG works with a variety of state and federal law enforcement authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Postal Authorities, and the Treasury Department.

The OIG maintains a hotline, which offers a confidential means for reporting vital information. Callers are encouraged to assist the OIG by providing information on how they can be contacted for additional information, but the caller may remain anonymous if he or she insists. More information is available at the OIG’s Web site at http: //oig.hhs.gov/hotline.html.

Most states have their own Fraud Hotlines, usually for Medicaid claims. You can contact your state’s Medicaid office for additional information. In addition, the following states have adopted their own state False Claims Act to encourage reporting of health care fraud and abuse: California, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
