Not yet available in the United States, Smartee Sleep Aligners are designed to correct anterior teeth during the day and maintain airway patency at night.
Shanghai-based Smartee Denti-Technology has launched Smartee Sleep Aligners, a clear orthodontic aligner designed to help manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), in select global markets, but not yet in the United States.
The new series includes two versions: Smartee SA, which focuses on the treatment of OSA and primary snoring, and Smartee SA Plus—which Smartee says will be able to treat OSA while simultaneously addressing orthodontic issues. No US Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearances are currently listed under the name Smartee. Smartee sells its devices in many European countries.
The Smartee Sleep Aligners Series feature digitally customized clear aligners with a dual-splint locking system that advances the mandible while distributing occlusal forces to stabilize the jaw. This mandibular repositioning increases the volume of the velopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airways, according to Smartee, improving airflow and alleviating OSA symptoms.
Additionally, the appliance, made from a 1 mm-thick dental sheet, helps to reposition the mandible, which also leads to improved tongue base positioning, contributing to an expanded pharyngeal airway and reduced obstruction.
Smartee SA Features
Features of Smartee SA include:
- Enlarge the velopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airway volume via mandibular advancement.
- Titration assists clinicians in efficiently identifying the optimal mandibular advancement setting.
Smartee SA Plus
Features of Smartee SA Plus include:
- Indicated for mild-to-moderate OSAH combined with mild anterior misalignment.
- Function: Daytime: Correcting anterior teeth with regular clear aligners. Nighttime: Maintains airway patency and reduces snoring by wearing specially designed aligners with the mandibular advancement feature.
- Benefit: Offers both integrated daytime orthodontic correction and nocturnal snore suppression.
Where available, both appliances can be ordered by clinicians through the Smartee Case Management System.
